One of the things I love about thrift store shopping is that you never know what you will find. Lately, I’ve been having good luck on Facebook Marketplace. That is where I found this beauty!

The moment I spotted this headboard, with stunning detail, I had one of those lightbulb moments. Don’t you love when that happens? I’ve been wanting a statement piece for my garden and knew this headboard would be perfect!

Of course, I had to give it my own personal touch and that is where the buffalo plaid comes in. If you love buffalo plaid as much as I do, check out this post on buffalo check decor trends.

Once the buffalo plaid was added, a pretty fresh cut flowers sign was attached to really complete that garden look I was going for. So, let me show you this super simple DIY tutorial.

Be sure to keep an eye out for a headboard on your next shopping trip, or check out Marketplace!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED for a DIY Repurposed Headboard Garden Sign

Start by wiping down the headboard with Liquid TSP Cleaner with an old rag. This is the first thing I do with any piece of furniture that I’m updating. Give the headboard 2-3 coats of chalk paint. Let the paint dry completely.

If you’ve visited here before, you know I love to use chalk paint. I even have a DIY chalk paint recipe with video if you want to try your own. It’s a great way to keep costs down, and it works great!

Now it’s time to stencil the headboard. Tape the buffalo plaid stencil to the headboard with painter’s tape. Start painting, with a stencil brush and white chalk paint, at one end of the headboard and work your way over to the opposite end.

The way to make sure the stencil lines up is to place the stencil over the last completed row and continue painting until the headboard is covered.

NEXT…

Once the headboard is painted with the stencil, slowly remove the painter’s tape. Let the paint dry completely. You can use a heat gun to speed up the process if you like.

Now all that’s left is to attach the pretty fresh flower sign to the repurposed headboard. I found this sign at Hobby Lobby. It was the perfect piece to add to this beauty. Check out my tips for 7 easy ways to save at Hobby Lobby.

To attach the sign just secure it to the center of the headboard with a couple of wood screws and the picture hangers that are already on the fresh flower sign. Easy peasy!

Just look at how pretty it is surrounded by flowers. This area will fill in even more by the end of summer. I’ll try to add an updated photo so you can see it in all it’s glory.
