- Small handle or knob (I used a bee from Hobby Lobby)
- Scissors
- Plate or platter (I used the bee one from Dollar Tree)
Step-by-Step Tutorial for Making a DIY Lampshade
One of the most fun projects I’ve come across is turning a thrifted lampshade into a charming food cover. I saw it first on Instagram.
Step 1: Choose Your Lampshade
Start by selecting a lampshade from a thrift store. Look for one that has a sturdy frame and is the right size to cover your platter or plate.
Make sure the fabric is already removed, leaving just the wire frame. If the fabric is still on, you’ll need to carefully cut it away.
Step 2: Attach the Mesh or Tulle
Measure the circumference and height of the lampshade frame. Cut a piece of fine mesh or tulle that is slightly larger than these measurements to ensure full coverage.
Drape the mesh over the lampshade frame, making sure it covers all sides evenly.
Step 3: Secure the Tulle
Using a hot glue gun, carefully attach the tulle to the top edge of the lampshade frame.
Work in small sections, applying a thin line of glue and pressing the tulle into place.
Continue around the entire frame, ensuring the tulle is taut and secure.
Step 4: Trim Excess Tulle
Once the tulle is securely attached, use scissors to trim away any excess material.
Be careful not to cut too close to the glue line, as you want the tulle to remain securely in place.
Step 5: Add Decorative Trim (Optional)
For a polished look, you can add decorative lace trim or ribbon around the top edge of the lampshade frame where the tulle is attached.
Use the hot glue gun to secure the trim, working in small sections to ensure it adheres well.
Step 6: Attach a Knob
To make your food cover easy to lift, attach a small handle or knob to the top of the lampshade frame.
You can find handles or knobs at any hardware store or repurpose one from an old drawer or cabinet.
Use the hot glue gun to secure the handle to the top center of the frame.
Benefits of a DIY Lampshade Food Cover
Practicality
A DIY lampshade food tent cover is a practical solution for keeping bugs away from your food, especially during outdoor gatherings. The fine mesh allows air to circulate while protecting your food.
Budget-Friendly
This project is incredibly budget-friendly. Thrifted lampshades are usually very affordable, and the other materials like tulle, trim, and knobs are inexpensive.
You can create a stylish food cover for a fraction of the cost of store-bought versions.
Customization
One of the best parts of this DIY project is the ability to customize it to match your personal style.
Choose colors, trims, and handles that reflect your taste and complement your dining decor. The possibilities are endless!
Tips for a Successful Project
- Choose the Right Size: Make sure the lampshade frame is large enough to cover your serving dishes but not too bulky to handle easily.
- Secure the Tulle Well: Take your time attaching the tulle to ensure it is taut and secure. Loose tulle can sag and won’t provide effective coverage.
- Decorative Touches: Don’t hesitate to get creative with the decorative elements. Adding ribbons, lace, or even painting fun designs on the frame can make your food cover unique and eye-catching.
Creating a DIY lampshade food cover is a fun and creative way to repurpose old items while adding a functional piece to your home.
Whether you use it for outdoor picnics, barbecues, or indoor gatherings, this charming food cover will keep your dishes protected and stylishly presented.
Happy crafting, and enjoy your new food cover!
