Tips and Tricks

  • If you don’t have self-rising flour you can make your own by adding 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder and 1/4 teaspoon of salt for every one cup of all-purpose flour.
  • Grease the loaf pan with some butter or olive oil spray so the loaf doesn’t stick.
  • When rolling dough with your hands it helps to have wet hands so the dough doesn’t stick to you.
  • To finely chop the garlic place it in the food processor.
  • Let the bread cool just a few minutes before slicing it or it will tear.

Should I use salted or unsalted butter to make this garlic bread?

You can really use salted or unsalted butter to make this garlic bread. However, I use salted butter when I make this garlic bread recipe. As for the garlic toast itself, I like to use salted butter once it’s nice and toasty golden brown.

Can I use garlic powder instead of fresh garlic?

You can certainly try; however, there is nothing better than fresh garlic for making buttery garlic bread.

What is a good substitute for buttermilk?

If you don’t have any buttermilk in the fridge you can make your own by adding one tablespoon of white vinegar and enough regular milk to make one cup. You can also use one tablespoon of lemon juice if you don’t have white vinegar.

Can I use margarine instead of butter?

Yes, you can substitute margarine for garlic butter but I personally prefer the rich flavor and texture of real butter.
