How to Paint a Black Front Door the Easy Way

Painting a black front door can give your home a touch of sophistication and drama. Black is also a very versatile color that can be used as a backdrop in a variety of ways, so you can really get creative with your front door decor.

Materials

  • Painter's Tape
  • Sanding Paper
  • Caulk
  • High quality paintbrush
  • Rust-Oleum Door and Trim paint in Black

Instructions

  • Clean the surface of your door from dirt and spider webs, etc. If you have any ornamental coverings as I did, remove them at this time as well.
  • Tape off the door handles, security pads, and any glass inserts.
  • Caulk any cracks or crevices that need repair.
  • Lightly sand over any rough spots as well as the dried caulk areas to a smooth finish.
  • Apply a thin layer of Rust-Oleum Door & Trim paint using even strokes in the direction of the wood grain.
  • Allow to dry (about 45 minutes to 1 hour) and then apply a second coat.
  • Remove painter's tape and reattach any hardware or ornamental iron pieces.
